The Civil War uniforms of the Confederate soldiers were of poorer quality than those of the Union. The North was highly industrialized and had numerous mills operating throughout the north and they also had access to imports of cloth and materials from Europe. Imports to the South were highly restricted due to the Union Blockade and different colors were also worn, including blue, due to the shortage.
The styles and colors of uniforms were varied and the Confederate officers paid for their own uniforms
The majority of officer's jackets were double breasted with full facings on the collar and cuffs or with piped edges
All generals had three stars on upright collars stitched within a wreath and all embroidered in gold coloring.
Military affiliation was indicated with different colored facing on coats: red for artillery, yellow for cavalry, light blue for infantry, and black for medical
The officer's jackets were famous for the highly ornate gold braid Austrian knots on their sleeves
